A Memorial Day Worth Remembering

San Francisco National Cemetary - Memorial Day 2008

San Francisco National Cemetary – Memorial Day 2008

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.  ~Joseph Campbell

Andy Rooney in his 2005 “A Memorial Day Worth Remembering” said:

“For too many Americans, Memorial Day has become just another day off. There’s only so much time any of us can spend remembering those we loved who have died, but the men, boys really, who died in our wars deserve at least a few moments of reflection during which we consider what they did for us.

They died.

We use the phrase “gave their lives,” but they didn’t give their lives. Their lives were taken from them.

There is more bravery at war than in peace, and it seems wrong that we have so often saved this virtue to use for our least noble activity – war…”

Someone once said that Freedom isn’t free.  Even if you don’t support war, you can support those who sacrificed their lives and those who will in order that we might be here today, enjoying a day off of work or enjoying a BBQ with family and friends.

Wolfram|Alpha Finally Launches!

Posted on Monday, May 18, 2009 in Internet, Tools

WolframAlpha is not just your ordinary search engine. Rather than scouring the web and returning relevant links, Wolfram|Alpha is a “computational knowledge engine” that specializes in data – and lots of it.  Easy to use, you simply enter a calculation or free-form question in the search box.  Using built-in algorithms and data collections, Wolfram|Alpha attempts to provide a solution.

For instance, if you were looking for information on probability, typing in “Probability 4 heads 1 tail” would get you much more than a list of links on probability.

With the ability to calculate more advanced mathematical formulas , generate a variety of graphs and charts, and download it all in PDF format, Wolfram|Alpha is a data junkie’s dream come true.

For more on what Wolfram|Alpha is capable of doing, be sure to check out the screencast, examples, and visual gallery.

Make a Difference!

Posted on Sunday, May 17, 2009 in Misc, Uncategorized

The Animal Rescue Site

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on the purple box that says “Click here to Give – It’s Free!” You don’t have to fill anything out. When you click, they display ads from sponsors whose ad monies in turn go to support their charitable partners.

Pass it on. It takes less than a minute to make a difference!

Onwards

Onwards from AKQA on Vimeo.

Found this great little video created by James Jarvis, with the support of Nike.  According to Jarvis, an avid runner,

“The film was inspired by certain personal experiences in running – a favourite run over Blanchland moor in Northumberland, being attacked by a crow in Singapore – and also by the transcendent, almost psychedelic experience of the simple act of running.”
