Intelligent Barcodes?

This is an interesting idea I found [via The Daily What] for building a freshness meter into a barcode. The Fresh Code has a built in barcode and graph. As the product gets older, the actual barcode itself begins to disappear. Once it reaches 0% and the barcode disappears completely, the item is rendered unsellable; presumably because the barcode can no longer be scanned.

I wonder if this isn’t a little too much technology for something that should be relatively simple. Wouldn’t a visual inspection (or maybe a thump or two) tell you whether the product was good or not? Now, if they could invent something that would tell you about taste – for instance whether that watermelon was truly flavorable or whether the orange you were about to put in your basket was sweet or bland, then they might be onto something.

I do have to admit that this is pretty cool though and it has me thinking of other applications.
